Striped Bass
Species Description
Striped bass Morone saxatilis
Also known as stripers
Wild.
Striped bass are anadromous fish native to the Atlantic coast that migrate along the shoreline, in salt and freshwater, inhabiting beaches, rocky shores, bays, estuaries, and deep river channels.
Stripers have stout bodies with seven to eight continuous horizontal stripes on each side, from their gills to their tail. They are light green, olive, steel blue, black, or brown on top, with a white or silver iridescent underside.
Season
January 1 through December 31, inclusive.
For the most recent updates, visit Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR).
Status
Striped bass stock is overfished, but the fishing rate established under a rebuilding plan promotes population growth (Fishwatch.gov).
Regulatory Authority
Recreational fishing in state waters is governed by the DMR. The migratory stock is managed by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.
Harvest Method
Hook and line only – no gaffing. Striped bass incidentally caught on any unapproved hook type must be returned to the water immediately and without unnecessary injury. See the vessel and gear guide for more information.
Recreational Harvest
It is unlawful to fish for, take or possess striped bass in Federal waters.
Recreational fishermen are limited to one fish per day, greater than or equal to 28 inches and less than or equal to 31 inches in total length. Fish must be caught for personal use only.
See the 2025 Maine Striped Bass Regulations.
Health Benefits & Risks
Striped bass is a low-fat source of selenium and omega-3 fatty acids.
The Maine Center for Disease Control has issued safe eating guidelines for saltwater fish due to contamination from mercury, PCBs, dioxin, PFAS, and other chemicals. The State of Maine recommends that pregnant and nursing women, women who may get pregnant, nursing mothers and children under the age of eight not eat any striped bass. Everyone else should eat no more than four meals per year.
Buying & Preparing
Striped bass sold in Maine markets and restaurants is a cultured product primarily from the southern US.
Striped bass has firm, mild-flavored white flesh that works well grilled, baked, or pan-seared. It’s delicious with simple seasonings like lemon, herbs, and olive oil, and cooks best until it flakes easily with a fork. For a healthier meal, trim fatty areas where contaminants may concentrate and pair with fresh vegetables or grains.
