Summer is such a great time to catch up on reading and what better topic to dive into than Maine!

This is Natalie Springuel, from the University of Maine Sea Grant, host of Coastal Conversations. On our next program, we will talk with three Maine authors, including: Barbara Kent Lawrence whose novels explore the relationship between summer and year round island communities, a topic that grew out of research about the influence of culture on aspirations on Mount Desert Island. Catherine Schmitt who writes nonfiction, primarily about science, nature, and the environment, and works as a science communication specialist with Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park. And Hope Rowan, a writer of guidebooks and stories of the outdoors, and a freelance cartographer and GIS Specialist at the Center for Community GIS.

Though their published genres span fiction, non-fiction, guidebooks, science, history, and even love stories, these three authors share a passion for the Maine coast and its people, and we are thrilled to feature them on the next Coastal Conversations, July 26, 10-11 AM, only on WERU community radio, 89.9 FM in Blue Hill and online at WERU.org.

Guests

Barbara Lawrence first visited Mount Desert in 1948, and in 1979 became “a year-round summer person.” That perspective grounds her novels, which grew out of her dissertation about the influence of culture on aspirations on Mount Desert Island.  She has written seven other books and many articles on a wide range of topics.

Catherine Schmitt  writes nonfiction, primarily about science, nature, and the environment, and works as a science communication specialist with Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park.

Hope Rowan In addition to a writer of guide books and stories of the outdoors, Hope Rowan is a freelance cartogpher and works as a GIS Specialist at the Center for Community GIS.
