The Coastal States Organization (CSO) was established in 1970 to represent the coastal states, commonwealths and territories on legislative and policy issues relating to the sound management of coastal, Great Lakes and ocean resources. CSO represents the interests of the Governors from the thirty-five coastal states, commonwealths, and territories of the United States. CSO held their 41st annual meeting in Kennebunkport in October 2011.

At that meeting, CSO Members unanimously adopted a Policy to Advance US Coastal Zone Management calling for Congress and the Administration to:

  • support Coastal Programs as essential mechanisms to advance the nation’s coastal and ocean priorities;
  • reauthorize and reinvigorate the Coastal Zone Management Act; and
  • maintain federal consistency review under the CZMA.
