As coastal fish populations disappear, so too do the fishing communities they once supported. Fisheries heritage projects seek to highlight and conserve fishing traditions past and present, through education and information provided to residents and visitors. The Downeast Salmon Federation occupies a former hydroelectric station property that also houses two abandoned and two active fish camps used by local fishermen harvesting alewives, rainbow smelt, and tomcod, among other species. The Downeast Salmon Federation rebuilt one of the older fish camps as a "fishing heritage center" to display historical and cultural items from the area’s fishing past, and provide learning experiences on the water.

Sea Grant funds provided: $3,000 for construction costs and materials.
