In April 2010, Bumblebee Foods announced the closure of the Stinson Seafood Plant in Prospect Harbor, Maine, the last sardine cannery in the United States. Realizing the significance of this event, Ben Fuller of the Penobscot Marine Museum mobilized a documentary film crew from the University of Maine and Compass Light Productions to record the final days of the cannery. Sea Grant was able to provide immediate funding to enable the effort. The resulting images and video accompanied a New York Times article, were featured at the museum’s annual history conference in October 2010, and remain in the collection of the Penobscot Marine Museum.
