The Penobscot River Restoration Project plans to remove two dams on the lower Penobscot River. To date, there are no published studies of wetlands in the lower river or estuary. Researchers will identify, map, and survey vegetation of wetlands along the Penobscot River and estuary between Milford and Bucksport, Maine, prior to proposed dam removals. This documentation will allow for post-dam removal assessment of changes in wetland area, extent, and vegetation composition, which will contribute to an assessment of long-term impacts of the restoration project. The Penobscot River Restoration Trust will use the study’s results as part of dam removal permitting, and evaluating the success of the project.

1-year project: $1600
