Sara Piehler is a third-year undergraduate student at the University of New England pursuing a major in Marine Science. Her hometown is Pleasant Valley, New York. Currently, Piehler is working on a research project to create and design a buoy that will remotely transmit data for scientists to access real-time measurements. The goal of this project is to predict and warn shellfish farmers of potential phytoplankton blooms that could affect their product. Her short term goals is to create the first prototype of the project and her long term goal is to have multiple buoys deployed into Casco Bay and Saco Bay around kelp and mussel farms.
Piehler is a Maine Sea Grant 2020 Undergraduate Scholarship in Marine Sciences recipient.
