This video is a compilation of two of the three workshops held in December 2013. The video covers the Belfast and Portland workshops. The videographer was not available to attend the Machias workshop where speakers included Stefanie Alley from Lobster Tours on Islesford, Crystal Hitchings from Bold Coast Scenic Byway, and Jen Peters from Sunrise County Economic Council. Video content and times are as follows:
- Scott Gunst, an Attorney at Reeves McEwing, LLP covers the legal framework that fishermen and aquaculture farmers might consider as they enter into tourism, including liability, licensing, permitting, business structure and more. (Video’s first 55 minutes)
- Sebastian Belle of the Maine Aquaculture Association shares efforts to bring more of Maine’s fresh seafood to the plates of local restaurants and offers examples of how aquaculture farms have engaged in tourism (55:00).
- Liz Lodge and Kathy Goldner of Penobscot Marine Museum share a tourism perspective and how the new program, Experience Maritime Maine, can connect tourists with the maritime experience. (1:12:30)
- Alvion Kimball of the Bucksport Chamber of Commerce, and an Innkeeper, highlights the state’s role in aiding regional tourism efforts and the online resources available, both in promotions/marketing and training hospitality workers. (1:21:45)
- Open discussion in Belfast (1:26:30)
- Maine’s Department of Economic and Community Development explain the role they serve in helping Maine businesses succeed, the resources available to businesses, and how to move to the next level. (1:42:00)
- Chris Sherman, owner of the Island Creek Oyster Co. in Duxbury, MA shares his perspective on aquaculture tourism. While their main focus is on raising, harvesting, and distributing their oysters, they have been able to recognize the opportunities available to them from tourism. (1:45:10)
- Phil Savignano of the Maine Office of Tourism highlights the tourism demand and opportunities, explaining that tourists are seeking unique experiences whether that be hauling a lobster pot, sitting on our rocky coastline, or heading to the north woods seeking moose. (2:03:55)
