The end of November isn’t just about turkey, it’s about Maine scallops! Fishermen will start harvesting scallops on December 1st this year, just in time for the holiday season.

But, what makes Maine’s scallops so special? We hear their populations are recovering and that’s great news. But how are they managed and what’s the prognosis for the future? And why do Maine’s scallops taste so incredible?

This is Natalie Springuel, from the University of Maine Sea Grant, host of Coastal Conversations. On our next program, we will talk about Maine Scallops with Trisha Cheney from the MaineDepartment of Marine Resources; Togue Brawn, a self described “scallop evangelist” at Downeast Dayboat; Phoebe Jekielek from Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership; and Dana Morse from the University of Maine Sea Grant and Cooperative Extension.
