Phytoplankton play an important role in the biosphere. As producers of carbon, these microscopic algae are the first link in the oceanic food chain, supporting the world’s food and oxygen production.
Phytoplankton are the inspiration for Oceanic Scales, a series of interactive art pieces designed to change the way people think about how changes in the environment, such as climate change, can impact the foundations of life. Part art exhibit, part game, Oceanic Scales uses interactive experience to show users how climate inputs such as pH, temperature, and nitrogen levels affect phytoplankton.
With physical exhibit completed, Felice is in the process of completing production of a mobile application game system designed for elementary and middle school students. Sea Grant funds are supporting UMaine students who are helping with final production.
