Coastal and marine policy in the United States is a patchwork of laws under the jurisdiction of many different agencies within local, state, and federal levels of government. As ocean policy reform continues to chug along in Washington, ecosystem-based management is being touted as a more proactive, holistic approach. Yet obstacles persist: insufficient data, fragmented organization, and an absence of marine spatial planning. This symposium investigated the implications of proposed reforms in US ocean policy for the Gulf of Maine. The event was designed for people engaged in marine-related industries and resource management. These stakeholders convened at Bowdoin in October 2010 to identify areas of agreement and disagreement, build relationships, and inform the government on the best way to implement reform at the regional level.
