2025 Maine Sea Grant – NOAA Fisheries Undergraduate Internships in Sea-run Fish Research

Olivia Ellis is an undergraduate student at the University of New England, majoring in Aquaculture, Aquarium Science, and Aquaponics. Her academic work has focused on the creation and maintenance of aquaponic and biofloc systems, reflecting her commitment to sustainable aquatic practices.

Originally from the Adirondack Mountains in New York, Ellis grew up witnessing the impact of fishery conservation firsthand—an experience that inspired her passion for aquatic ecosystem health and helped shape her academic path.

In 2025, Ellis was selected as a Sea-run Fish Intern with the Maine Department of Marine Resources. She is spending the summer in Augusta gaining hands-on experience in fisheries management and fieldwork, contributing to efforts to protect endangered Atlantic salmon. This internship marks a crucial step toward her goal of a career in fishery management and conservation.

Outside of her studies, Ellis enjoys running, hiking, swimming, and baking.
