As the fall colors begin to fade, so does the congestion in Acadia National Park. But in recent years, the high volumes of people accessing both the Park and the surrounding Mount Desert Island towns during the summer and shoulder seasons has caused increased traffic, overloaded parking lots and, many would say, decreased visitor experience.
The Park Service is looking for solutions to better manage the movement of people and their cars throughout this finite island. And Bar Harbor’s business community is watching.
This is Natalie Springuel, from the University of Maine Sea Grant, host of Coastal Conversations. On our next program, we will explore congestion and transportation planning in Acadia National Park. Joining me in the studio will be John Kelly, Management Assistant for Acadia National Park, and Martha Searchfield, Executive Director of the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce.
