Aquaculture is a growing part of Maine’s seafood economy and has been making its way into the working waterfront here for decades. In recent years, the pace of aquaculture’s growth has accelerated and it is becoming a significant contributor to local seafood and local economies. With its growth come questions about the sustainability of the industry both economically and ecologically.
During this week’s Coastal Conversations we’ll be hearing about a comprehensive research project being led by the University of Maine call the Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture Network or SEANET. This 5-year, National Science Foundation-funded, grant is made possible through the ESPCoR program which is hosted at the University of Maine.
The SEANET project is exploring a wide range of topics relating to the aquaculture industry here in Maine. Important questions include: the interaction with our coastal ecosystems, the effects that climate change might have, how aquaculture fits into our coastal working waterfronts, and what kinds of value-added products can be developed.
Maine Sea Grant Director, Paul Anderson, will host the program and he will be joined by four of the 24 graduate students that are hard at work conducting research to try and answer those and other related questions. You’ll have an opportunity to call in and ask your own questions of these young experts.
