Being a successful fisherman or woman in 2016 requires innovation, tenacity, and grit. By some measures, these are the same qualities fishermen relied on to find and catch fish 20 or 40 years ago. The difference is that today’s fishermen need to be creative business entrepreneurs and savvy policy analysts, as well as the topnotch ecological observers they have been for generations. That’s a lot of pressure on young folks who want to make their living on the water.
This is Natalie Springuel from the University of Maine Sea Grant, host of Coastal Conversations. On our next program, we will talk with young fishermen as well as participants in the Eastern Maine Skippers Program about what it takes to train youth so they have the diverse skills and knowledge needed to succeed on the water and what qualities today’s young fishermen need to survive in this ever changing industry and marine environment.
