Dear Friend and Supporter of Maine Sea Grant:
We are honored and humbled to have received such an outpouring of support for our work over the past five days. You and more than 3,400 other individuals took the time to share your personal stories about the benefits and impacts of our work in your lives and in your communities. We have provided your comments and names to Senator Collins. You have made all the difference.
We are deeply grateful to Senator Collins for her dedication to the future of the Maine Sea Grant Program and the people of Maine. Thanks to her efforts, meaningful action was taken that will allow Maine Sea Grant to continue to work with Maine’s coastal communities.
On Wednesday, March 5th, following her conversation with U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Lutnick, Senator Susan Collins announced that Maine Sea Grant will have an opportunity to renegotiate its 2024-2027 federal omnibus funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
“I appreciate the Secretary’s willingness to work together to ensure that Maine Sea Grant can continue to conduct research, support a robust pipeline of skilled labor, and ensure that our coastal economies remain profitable hubs for fishermen, lobstermen, and hospitality workers. It is important that Maine Sea Grant can continue to provide valuable services for communities across the state for years to come,” said Senator Collins.
We are thankful to have this opportunity to continue to serve the people of Maine, in partnership with more than 700 businesses, community and nonprofit organizations, local, state, federal, and tribal government partners, scientists, educators, and students.
With gratitude,
The Maine Sea Grant Team
