The State of Maine's Beaches Report

Scientists use Volunteer Data to Track Trends in Sand Movement at Maine Beaches

The State of Maine's Beaches is a biennial report produced by marine geologists at the Maine Geological Survey.  In the report, geologists discuss the significance of the volunteer beach profile data, including long term and seasonal trends, recovery of the beaches from the impacts of large storm events such as the Patriot's Day storm of 2007, and an analysis of other factors that influence beach sand movement including waves, sea level, and currents.

The reports are organized into chapters, an introduction, discussion of each beach, summary, and conclusions.  The reports are available from the Maine Geological Survey website as PDF files, or they can be viewed online.
