As saltwater fishing season gets underway, anglers may want to check on any changes to the rules about size and catch limits, and gear restrictions.

The National Marine Fisheries Service made no changes to Gulf of Maine species in their latest update on the status of federally-managed fisheries

There have been some changes for fishing in state waters (within three miles of shore): a year-round season for winter flounder, and larger minimum size for haddock (changed from 18 inches to 21 inches).

On the certification front, Maine lobster has been deemed “sustainable” by the Marine Stewardship Council, as I reported in March.

These changes and others have been incorporated into the Maine Seafood Guide, which is updated quarterly.
