Financing and Crop Insurance Programs

An introduction to programs from the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Maine Farm Service Agency that may be of interest to shellfish growers. 

Whole-Farm Revenue Protection (WFRP) is a new crop insurance option for producers, such as diversified and specialty crop producers, with historically little access to crop insurance. WFRP protects the producer's adjusted gross revenue against unavoidable natural causes of yield loss and decline in market price. Producers insuring one commodity can choose coverage levels of 50-75%, whereas producers insuring three or more commodities are eligible for higher levels of coverage (80-85%) and greater premium subsidy. This presentation by University of Maine Cooperative Extension Risk Management and Crop Insurance specialists will introduce WFRP, producer record keeping requirements, and compare WFRP coverage to the Farm Service Agency's Non-insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) for aquaculture.

Representatives from the US Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency (FSA) will present information about program and loan opportunities available to aquaculture producers including options to mitigate risk of loss, improve financial viability, and obtain critical working capital. Recent changes have enhanced the availability of FSA programs to aquaculture growers, and highlighted will be programs at FSA such as loan guarantees, the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program, and the Farm Storage and Facilities Loan. - We provide training and education to health care providers, agricultural professionals, emergency response agencies, and other community groups about agricultural workers with disabilities.

- Services are provided at no charge. 

Maine AgrAbility programming is funded through a grant from the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.  We network with many existing resources and help provide connections for agricultural workers and their families."
